Gravestone rubbing experience at Kilkea Castle

This will be my last Gravestone Rubbing Experience at Kildare’s Kilkea Castle as I move to other projects. Celebrate Heritage Week, trace the past and reveal hidden details. I’ll teach you gravestone rubbing techniques that bring the past up close and introduce you to dramatic stories and legends as you trace Ireland’s traditions and symbols.

Kilkea was the seat of the Fitzgerald dynasty for hundreds of years. Join me to explore the pet’s cemetery and explore the old church graveyard, and enjoy dramatic stories that feature monkeys, mermaids, evil eyes, wizard Earls, and the Silken Thomas’ table. You’ll also get to make your own prints from intricate details on the monuments and headstones of the Fitzgerald family cemetery at Kilkea Castle, Co Kildare along the way!

Gravestone rubbing – carried out with care – is a fun and absorbing activity that will give you an appreciation of past craftsmanship and the stories buried in Ireland’s Ancient East. It also offers you a wonderful way to explore and record family history and create unique genealogical records

Workshop highlights:

  • Experiment with a variety of oriental and Awagami papers using different rubbing techniques.
  • Spend an afternoon with likeminded people interested in history & heritage.
  • Make beautiful prints you can bring home with you.
