About the Festival

Kildare Town in one of the oldest urban centres in Ireland. It was established in 480AD by St. Brigid who built a wooden church by an Oak Tree, “Cill Dara – Church of the Oak”, on the site where St. Brigid’s Cathedral now sits.

To celebrate our heritage and honestly, to have some fun, the one day annual event, the Kildare Town Medieval Festival began in 2015. The Festival is our contribution to National Heritage Week and we are supported by the National Walled Towns Network along with Kildare County Council and our sponsors.

Festival 2017

This year’s theme, The Vikings, is very relevent to Kildare as we have been invaded a total 15 times by Vikings and the 16th invasion will happen on August 20th this year!
