Kildare Town Guided Tours

Why not take a tour of one of the oldest towns in Ireland – visit St. Brigid’s Cathedral, the site of a Norman Castle, three medieval Abbeys and much much more. Discover this fascinating heritage on a guided walk around the Town, by a local historian or by yourself with the Hundred Acres self-guided tour of the town and immediate area, available on the Grey Abbey Conservation Project website:

Discover this historically important Irish town and learn about the mythology of Fionn Mac Cumhaill and St. Brigid, patroness of the Gaels. Key stops along the route include St. Brigid’s Cathedral, a Norman tower house, the site of the Turf Club, and the thirteenth century Franciscan Abbey, to mention a few.

Learn about St. Brigid the PATRONESS of the IRELAND – MARY of the GAEL, Strongbow, The Earls of Kildare, Lord Edward FitzGerald and the 1798 Rebellion and The Gordon Bennett Motor Race etc. There is the Annual Féile Bríde Festival, Annual Derby Festival, Annual Drama Festival and new Annual Gordon Bennett Book Fair and Commemorative Car Rally.

Kildare Town has excellent rail and motorway access and has strong associations with tourism through the Irish National Stud, Japanese Gardens and St. Fiachra’s Garden, the Curragh Racecourse and of late the Kildare Retail Outlet Village . There are two golf courses and hotel and other accommodation nearby.

Tie up the whole package with a visit to the National Stud, Japanese Gardens and St. Fiachra’s Garden; go shopping in Kildare Outlet Shopping Village, play a couple of holes of golf at Dunmurry or Cill Dara golf course (Ireland’s oldest golf course) or go horse racing at the Curragh. A feast for all the family!

The Kildare Historic Town Guided Walking Tours have been developed and are available all year round with advance booking – they are possible through the close partnership of Kildare Town Heritage Centre, Kildare Retail Outlet Village , Kildare Cathedral, Kildare County Council, Cill Dara Historical Society and Grey Abbey Conservation Project.

Another very successful turnout for the Guided Walking Tour of Kildare Town during Féile Bríde 2010, with Local Historians and Tour Guides Mario Corrigan and James Durney.
