What Would Shackleton Do?

What Would Shackleton Do? is a podcast by the Shackleton Autumn School exploring how Ernest Shackleton handled crisis and isolation to ultimately triumph over extreme conditions.

At times in life we look to others for inspiration, to help us get through. The Covid-19 pandemic, and the drastic changes imposed on our lives is such an occasion.

The Shackleton Autumn School, Athy, Co Kildare (close to where Ernest Shackleton was born) in conjunction with Dr. Juliana Adelman of DCU have looked at Ernest Shackleton and how he handled crisis and isolation to ultimately triumph over extreme conditions.

We ask ourselves, ‘What would Shackleton do’ in the current crisis?

Juliana Adelman talks to Kevin Kenny about how Shackleton and his men were able to maintain optimism in the extreme circumstances of the Antarctic after they had to abandon their ship, the Endurance.

Readings from Shackleton’s book South are performed by John Carty of the Blue Raincoat Theatre Company. Music comes from the piece ‘Shackleton’s Endurance’, commissioned by the Athy Shackleton Museum and composed by Brian Hughes with narration (not heard) by John McKenna. The series is introduced by Jonathan Shackleton and produced by Juliana Adelman.
