Shackleton Experience, located in the heart of Athy, Co. Kildare, is the only institution in the world dedicated to the extraordinary life and achievements of Ernest Shackleton, the legendary polar explorer who was born in nearby Kilkea in 1874.

The world-class attraction uses cutting-edge technology, dramatic digital storytelling, and sensory effects to bring Shackleton’s inspiring journey to life – from his birthplace in Kildare to the vast polar ice caps.

Visitors will gain a unique glimpse into the remarkable life of Shackleton and the Heroic Age of Polar Exploration as it unfolds across 11 immersive galleries.

Housed in Athy’s beautifully restored 300-year-old Town Hall on Emily Square, the venue features a striking glass shard extension in the shape of an iceberg, while an iconic statue of Ernest Shackleton stands proudly at the entrance.

The Shackleton Experience also features rare original film footage in a reconstructed 1920’s cinema which showcases footage and historic clips of Shackleton’s various expeditions and activities, bringing his amazing story vividly to life.

Discover the largest collection of Shackleton artefacts in the world, including:

  • The actual cabin in which Ernest Shackleton died of a heart attack on the ship ‘Quest’ during the Shackleton-Rowett Expedition to the South Pole in 1921
  • The sledge and harness used on the Nimrod Expedition
  • Replica models of the Endurance and Quest ships as well as the James Caird lifeboat that rescued the crew after the Endurance shipwreck

How to get there? Nestled in the Historic Town Hall Building in Athy, Co. Kildare, the Shackleton Experience is at the heart of a vibrant heritage town. Overlooking Emily Square, it’s easily reached—just under an hour from Dublin and minutes from Exit 3 on the M9 Motorway.
