Fun for all the family in Kildare this Autumn with the best places to stay and things to do
If you’ve been holding off on a family staycation until the later part of the year and you’re looking for a break that ticks all the boxes in terms of accommodation, fun activities and being able to explore the outdoors – Kildare has got all of them in abundance.
Whether it’s a fairytale castle experience you want – or a more hands on, country farm experience, we’ve put together some suggestions that both you and the kids will love – all you’ll need to do is to remember to bring your imagination.
If you’re looking for the full rural countryside farm experience – why not opt for staying in a real life farm. Ballindrum Farm is a fully operational dairy farm ( you can get tours if you book in advance) but also has four star self -catering accommodation available.
Accommodation is fully wheelchair accessible with two bedrooms – one double ensuite and a twin with a wheelchair accessible bathroom – so it’s got plenty of space to kick back and relax in your rural hideaway, and it’s also a great spot to base yourselves if you’re going to get out and explore the local Athy surroundings.
Athy Boat Tours is just one option in close proximity if you’ve got some water babies who love getting out amongst nature and wildlife.

For the little fairies in your life, Killashee Hotel in Naas is the obvious choice with a recently added Fairy Forest and Playground.
Complimentary bikes are also available to all guests so you can have a leisurely cycle through the picturesque estate. For yourself, if you find yourself needing fuel on the search to find some more fairies, Killashee has its own coffee dock on site which serves tea, scones, pastries and light bites, and the hotel is also equipped with a 25m swimming pool, a gym and 18 treatment rooms if you can sneak in a visit to the spa. For creative fairies, Florence and Milly is located close by and offers ceramics, painting and pottery classes.

The Keadeen Hotel is family owned and family run – so you could say they have a good understanding of what it takes to create a brilliant hotel experience for other families.
With award winning gardens and top- class health and leisure facilities – it’s a perfect family option for a hotel break. If you’ve got a few minutes of free time to spare – the spa is also highly recommended. If you’ve got some little shoppers or want to indulge in retail therapy yourself – is close, as is Whitewater Shopping Centre. Kildare Farm Foods open farm and shop is also a great shout ( and entry to the open farm is free) if you would like to catch some camels and ostriches doing their thing.

Located in the Robertstown area of Clane these self-catering homes are a lovely option for a getaway. Ideally situated if you’re looking for an outdoorsy escape and are planning lots of walks and exploring – from here you’ll be close to both the Curragh Plains, the Bog of Allen and Lullymore Heritage Park which has some lovely family friendly options – with a large outdoor adventure play area and 18 hole mini golf, train trips, a pet farm and a magical treasure hunt to solve. If that’s not enough, there’s also the meandering canal towpaths that will give you another couple of kms of outdoor walking.
