Our decision to become part of the Peace Pole Movement is inspired by St. Brigid, whose fame as a peacemaker was such that the future abbess of Kildare would be known as a “woman who turns back the streams of war”.  Rekindling the Flame Sr. Rita Minehan The Peace Pole is an international symbol of peace and acts as a silent prayer and message for peace on Earth. Its purpose is to spread the message: “May Peace Prevail on Earth.” It is a reminder that we all share a common desire to strive for peace especially in times of conflicts, uncertainty and divisions. By planting this Peace Pole we affirm that peace begins with each of us.  It is a reminder that despite our difference we can stand united and pray for world peace. History of the Peace Pole Movement A Peace Pole is a monument that displays the message “May Peace Prevail on Earth” in the language of the country where it has been placed and may also include additional translations. It was an initiative of Japanese peace activist Masahisa Goi.  After the devastation of World War II, particularly the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki Goi was inspired with the message “May Peace Prevail on Earth” and dedicated his life to spreading this universal prayer. The first Peace Pole was planted in Japan in 1955.  What started as a local peace initiative grew into a global movement, with over 250,000 Peace Poles now planted in almost every country. Peace Poles serve as visible symbols of global harmony and unity and an encouragement to the observer to promote peace.
