Athy

Athy is one of two heritage towns in Kildare and developed into a market town thanks to the canal and river network – it is here the River Barrow meets the Athy branch of the Grand Canal. Athy is known internationally for hosting the Shackleton Autumn School in tribute to the great explorer, Ernest Shackleton, who was born at nearby Kilkea and in fact it is home to the only permanent exhibition dedicated to the explorer.
