Kildare

The town of Kildare dates back to the 5^th century and takes its name from the Gaelic, Cill Dara which means Church of the Oak, the monastery founded by St Brigid on the site under an oak tree. The town is rich in heritage and history and the original 19^th century Market House offers a glimpse into the past through an immersive virtual reality experience, a great starting point for your visit. St Brigid’s Cathedral and Round Tower are nearby – the tower stands almost 33 metres high and is the highest climbable round tower in Ireland, you’ll be sure to get a great view of the town and Curragh Plains. St Brigid’s Well is a short walk away and a visit to Solas Bhride Hermitages will tell her story. The first international motor race to be held in Britain or Ireland, the Gordon Bennett Cup, passed through Kildare. In more modern times the town is a destination for shopaholics visiting Kildare Village and for a great day out at the world famous Irish National Stud and Gardens.
