Two Kildare businesses might have had their doors closed to the public as a result of the pandemic, but, to coin a phrase, necessity is the mother of invention as both reached to the stars, literally, as a number of high profile actors taking refuge with them for filming purposes over the last number of months.
Brennan’s Kilteel Inn, a 100-year-old Irish pub in the village of Kilteel in County Kildare, has spent lockdown as a film set for a mystery TV series. The pub have been staying tight-lipped on what’s currently being filmed but have been dropping hints that Adrian Dunbar and Tommy Tiernan have both been through the doors recently.
The first season of Virgin Media Ireland’s hit crime drama Blood starring Line of Duty’s Adrian Dunbar has previously been filmed at the pub but there’s no indication that they have returned for a second season of filming.
Just 30 minutes from this popular haunt sits the stunning Castletown House; an 18th century Palladian-style country house located in Celbridge, where upcoming Netflix romcom Mr Malcom’s List was recently shot. Famous faces such as Slumdog Millionaire’s Frieda Pinto, Ashely Park of Emily in Paris and heartthrob Theo James from The Divergent Series caused a stir when caught on camera strolling through the Kildare set, where they filmed on location for a number of months.
While these businesses have enjoyed the benefits of their brush with Hollywood, other popular Kildare haunts have been finding other ways to keep busy in the interim.
TwoCooks, a Sallins-based restaurant overlooking The Grand Canal, is coming to the final stages of a large renovation project, which will allow them to better facilitate groups indoors. Nearby neighbours Lock 13 have also carried out significant works to their outdoor dining area.
Athy’s Clanard Court Hotel underwent substantial upgrades during the lockdown period, with an outdoor jacuzzi and hot tub now available at the hotel in addition to a large outdoor dining area with a fully enclosable retractable awning fitted at Bailey’s Outdoor Dining Terrace.
Burtown House and Gardens is another outdoor dining option in Athy which has seen huge demand upon reopening, with extensive picnic/ takeaway options also available.
It seems that leisure breaks are not the only area experiencing a surge in popularity, with famous shopping destinations like Kildare Village also seeing large influxes of visitors since reopening, in addition to this, the shopping centre has committed to continuing the virtual shopping option that it began during the pandemic, which it said will add an “additional and unique experience for customers.”
Close to Kildare Village, both outdoors dining and the museum at Newbridge Silverware are open to the public with an advance booking not necessary, however, the number of persons admitted is monitored in accordance with the current public health guidelines.
